{"id":1973,"date":"2011-04-27T18:22:26","date_gmt":"2011-04-28T02:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cciforum.dreamhosters.com\/?p=1973"},"modified":"2012-12-08T11:23:53","modified_gmt":"2012-12-08T19:23:53","slug":"space-and-object-exercise-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cciforum.dreamhosters.com\/?p=1973","title":{"rendered":"Space and Object Exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toward the end of the call last Sunday, I heard Jack explain an exercise in which one focuses on the space in which an object appears rather than focusing on the object.<\/p>\n<p>At once, painting, drawing and sculpting came to mind.\u00c2\u00a0 When engaged in painting, for this example, my primary focus is painting the space, with the object during the creative process a secondary focus.\u00c2\u00a0 The object later emerges as the space it inhabits is filled with color, texture, what have you, without my painting the actual object.<\/p>\n<p>I do not paint hard outlines or edges to define an object.\u00c2\u00a0 In this type of painting, drawing and sculpting, one sees differently.\u00c2\u00a0 Interestingly, I observe the object\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s essence is more clearly expressed by painting it in this manner than if I had had focused on it primarily and simply defined it by painting hard outlines or edges.<\/p>\n<p>Also, in music, when I played in the orchestra, we did not focus on our own playing, on our own part of the piece.\u00c2\u00a0 We listened to the entire orchestra, and, listening, intuitively played our piece into the greater space of the orchestra and hall.\u00c2\u00a0 Had we focused primarily on the object \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the individual musician \u00e2\u20ac\u201c space would have fragmented.<\/p>\n<p>These artistic and musical practices are my lifelong habit of focusing primarily on space and secondarily on the object, if my understanding of this week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lesson is on track.\u00c2\u00a0 It offers a unique perspective \u00e2\u20ac\u201c field? \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from which to live my life.\u00c2\u00a0 I find I can focus on an object, when necessary, but I find I also prefer less \u00e2\u20ac\u0153zooming in\u00e2\u20ac\u009d most times.<\/p>\n<p>And\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6I wonder about the natural world.\u00c2\u00a0 For example, I live near great aspen forests \u00e2\u20ac\u201c groves?\u00c2\u00a0 While they look like individual trees, they are actually collectively many trees connected underground as one living organism.\u00c2\u00a0 We usually focus on the space \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the entire aspen forest in a scene \u00e2\u20ac\u201c before we zoom in to focusing on one tree.<\/p>\n<p>Is that what we do?\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Zoom In\u00e2\u20ac\u009d when we primarily focus on an object?\u00c2\u00a0 Is this where the phrase, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t see the forest for the trees\u00e2\u20ac\u009d originates?<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if this process makes sense transcending art, music and TSK?\u00c2\u00a0 Am I on track?<\/p>\n<p>Warm regards, Erin<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toward the end of the call last Sunday, I heard Jack explain an exercise in which one focuses on the space in which an object appears rather than focusing on the object.
