Wikipedia&#8217;s take on it might be of interest\u00c2\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alchemy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The simple derivation from the Oxford dictionary is this:\u00c2\u00a0<span class=\"dateGroup\">late Middle English<\/span>: via <a class=\"w translation\" title=\"Meaning of Old French\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/Old-French\">Old French<\/a> and <a class=\"w translation\" title=\"Meaning of medieval Latin\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/medieval-Latin\">medieval Latin<\/a> from <a class=\"w translation\" title=\"Meaning of Arabic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/Arabic\">Arabic<\/a> <em>al-k\u00c4\u00abmiy\u00c4\u0081&#8217;<\/em>, from <em>al<\/em> &#8216;the&#8217; +<em>k\u00c4\u00abmiy\u00c4\u0081&#8217;<\/em> (from <a class=\"w translation\" title=\"Meaning of Greek\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/Greek\">Greek<\/a> <em>kh\u00c4\u201cmia<\/em>, <em>kh\u00c4\u201cmeia<\/em> &#8216;art of transmuting metals&#8217;). Though I doubt that the obsession with &#8216;transmuting metals&#8217; was actually in the fundament of the word&#8217;s original usage. Does anyone know the\u00c2\u00a0<em>exact<\/em> translation of the Greed\u00c2\u00a0<em>khemia<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia starts with listing the three major goals of alchemy: the creation of the fabled <a title=\"Philosopher's stone\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philosopher%27s_stone\">philosopher&#8217;s stone<\/a>; the ability to transmute <a title=\"Base metal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Base_metal\">base metals<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0into the <a title=\"Noble metal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Noble_metal\">noble metals<\/a> (gold or silver); and development of an <a title=\"Elixir of life\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elixir_of_life\">elixir of life<\/a>, which would confer youth and longevity.
