I have friends. Some of them as old or older than I, and as my friend and poet, Ken McKeon said, talking about the struggle to achieve as the body\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time runs out, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6warmth is needed as mortality’s chill shadow makes its presence more and more known each passing day.<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Though seldom mentioned, this resonates in this beating heart. It is perhaps one side of why melancholy is married to joy, sound echoes in silence, or something appears from nothing and returns to it. <\/p>\n

In the flow of living there are, like the tides, currents that become urgent and then recede, the drive to achieve can be like that, perhaps ego eventually gives way to doing for the sake of love of doing. And appreciation for being busy opens to a love of the space for being calm. Gradually it dawns that from within the calm is where everything ascends, where the essence of life, its vitality and spark arise. I can feel that when I read this….<\/p>\n

THE RIVERS<\/strong>

\n For Jack and Ben<\/p>\n

The river awaits.<\/p>\n

This river, all set for:
\n Geese needing water, food,
\n A refuge on their journey south.<\/p>\n

Maybe canoes with a couple of
\n Canoeists on board<\/p>\n

With sandwiches,
\n With six-packs of beer,
\n A few towels, sunglasses,
\n Tubes of sunscreen.<\/p>\n

But here now another river, not a thing,
\nMore a wet still flowing,
\nAs we all are, as today is
\n In the wringing out of a pair of frayed jeans
\n Smoothed for drying on a more than warm boulder,
\n Fabric face up glaring at the sun
\n With the sun glaring right back at it,
\n The rivets too hot to touch.
\n The leather plaque bearing the brand name,
\n Stretched stitching, shrunken raveled skin.<\/p>\n

And the person who wore them
\nGazes at the bone dry stream-bed
\nAnd closes his eyes and sees
\nThere dream clear a flow of water,
\nAnd strips off shorts and shirt
\nAnd steps carefully over the fringing stones
\nAs he makes his way-ankle deep now-<\/p>\n

Into the current, so pleased to have feet
\nSettle into the yielding sand,
\nAnd yet more to rock knees down
\nInto the current, and then groin waist belly,
\nShoving off into deeper water,
\nThe dusky light above, and now
\nHere the cooler depths pouring
\nInto mouth nostrils ears the sheer
\nWet presence of being
\nAll in it so easily, and comes
\nA notion to roll the eyes, opening
\nAs and to the unsought blue sky,
\nAnd the current holds and takes
\nHim to where the still river flows.<\/p>\n

And still too the whole of the dry river bed,
\nThe hot sand, hotter stones, the sun
\nItself unbearable, all this a never change,
\nAll this, but not an all done, not a for now and forever.<\/p>\n

For this river too, even within the
\nBlistering heat, the unsought
\nRedemptive ways of the never sought,
\nThe I can never do, does,<\/p>\n

And the open hold is sure, and
\nThe wavering light play found
\nIn the rippling sand, the occasional
\nBrowsing fish, and, in silence, the bluest sky. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
