{"id":7264,"date":"2015-08-15T17:58:10","date_gmt":"2015-08-16T00:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cciforum.dreamhosters.com\/?p=7264"},"modified":"2015-08-15T17:58:10","modified_gmt":"2015-08-16T00:58:10","slug":"knowing-not-knowing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cciforum.dreamhosters.com\/?p=7264","title":{"rendered":"Knowing Not-Knowing."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<em>Both ordinary knowing and its correlate \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcnot-knowing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 can be thawed or cultivated to yield this luminescent quality<\/em>.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 TSK, 281.<\/p>\n<p>Does this imply that just as there are an ordinary and a higher knowing, there are also an ordinary and a higher \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcnot-knowing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122?\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps ordinary \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcnot-knowing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is what gets excluded when we try to possess an object of knowledge; while the kind of knowing that is in everything does not cast a shadow of non-knowing precisely because nothing is left outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcThe body of knowledge\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, as used in last week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s reading, suggests that nothing is absent just because we are unaware of its presence.\u00c2\u00a0 The sense of absence may be a sign that the self\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s focused searchlight is trying to cut something of special interest out of a greater whole.<\/p>\n<p>In the last day of the recent Ratna Ling retreat, Jack shared readings that left me feeling that the TSK vision is too vast for my ordinary mind to grasp and other readings that pointed out how ingrained is the tendency to turn away from anything too difficult.\u00c2\u00a0 Looking back now, I suspect that these are both avenues that invite a new relationship with the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcunknown\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>Since returning from the retreat, I have found myself marvelling at the depth of the readings; but then I turn automatically to a view that the most I can hope for is to be repeatedly moved by these readings\u00e2\u20ac\u201dsince I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know how to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcembody\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 them in how I actually live.\u00c2\u00a0 I expressed this in several personal e-mails to TSK-buddies, and received valuable feedback.\u00c2\u00a0 One was that the practices move us toward embodiment of new ways of being.\u00c2\u00a0 Another, from David, brought up something from the retreat itself:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Remember at the retreat we did the exercise sitting at the edge of the future, focused on the unknown.\u00c2\u00a0 After we came together to discuss it, you immediately conceptualized it posing a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcwhat if\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 question regarding the future . . .\u00c2\u00a0 I felt at that point you clung to the thought, missing the intent of the exercise\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 to feel the openness . . . to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcpractice\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 embodying exactly what you \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcthink\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 you are unable to do.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This gives me valuable feedback about something that I usually can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t see.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it takes a friend to point out the hold of a frozen \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcnot-knowing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u201dwhich is happily bobbing along in the great sea of \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcthe body of knowledge\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Both ordinary knowing and its correlate \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcnot-knowing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 can be thawed or cultivated to yield this luminescent quality.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 TSK, 281.
