\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcKeeping<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Time seems to be a necessity with us\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6up to a point. We say time marches on\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6relentless\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6like an engine on tracks made of cause and effect. But it is space that allows time to endow. And when OUR space opens, time presents more\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6even what had been deemed impossible. <\/p>\n

We manipulate time, while lamenting our slavery to it, for instance, in the practice of advancing clocks during summer months so that evening daylight lasts an hour longer, while sacrificing normal sunrise times, and adjust them backward in the autumn to standard time. But it is we who have been born of time\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6we ARE time\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/p>\n

Here are two interesting perspectives on time\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/p>\n

What an uneventful life in time the citizens of Tucson, Arizona must live. With no Spring Forward or Fall Back requiring them to talk with their clocks and phones, how do they keep from trudging straight ahead on the tracks of linear time, looking neither to right nor left, neither above nor below? This morning, I had to change six time pieces and verify that another four had already harkened to an atomic voice in the sky. Later today, my wife and I will visit her mother who needs a big faced clock to remind her what day it is and when the hour for mealtime rolls around. Wait–“rolls around”? Perhaps the train of daily interests and concerns also knows another kind of time, one that fosters a field of flowers in spring and sets loose armadas of spinning leaves upon the autumn winds . . .<\/em><\/p>\n

Time Change<\/strong>

Back in a sec, love.<\/p>\n

That’s what Hank hollered
\nAs he slammed the screen door shut,
\nAbout a thousand years ago,
\nMost likely more,
\n Long before the barnacles
\n Crusted up the bathtub,
\n Before here slipped away to there,
\n And the walruses rolled up
\n On our pool’s decking,<\/p>\n

And he hasn’t been seen since,
\nAnd Martha is wondering aloud
\nAbout the time change,
\nAbout how it was
\nThat the lava stopped flowing,
\nAnd the silence began
\nTo tear away at her dreams
\nOf how life used to be,
\nSo much so<\/p>\n

That the sky itself frayed,
\nAnd the gulls
\n Were marooned mid-flight,
\n Though their irresistible wings
\n Kept on beating on,
\n Those birds got nowhere fast,<\/p>\n

And we watched them like kites,
\nStationary and madly fluttering,
\nBut all their squawking
\nTransmuted into tunes,
\nAnd the tunes
\nRearranged themselves
\nInto colorful wings,
\nAnd they became our butterflies,
\nWe held them in our watches,
\nThis was far better than time,<\/p>\n

We knew that,
\nAnd so did Hank,
\nHe had been waiting for
\nThe second hand
\nTo shift one notch,
\nBut it never did<\/p>\n

And he was left with rainbows,
