Regarding the first exercise, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcLayers of Mind\u00e2\u20ac\u2122: Walking to a university lecture, I was practicing being aware of the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcnon-content\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 layers of mind (as defined by Jack) as I walked. I was particularly interested in the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcstate of mind\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 layer \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the general orientation level. I had previously been enjoying catching the quality of that kind of \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcspace.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122)<\/p>\n
On this particular occasion, though, it wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the felt-sensed quality that was interesting, but rather, the role or function of the underlying layers. I became aware of some way in which these background layers provide a kind of fundamental \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcgrounding\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsense of self.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 As I inspected the experience, I could see that they provide a kind of \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcmatrix\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a functioning without content of their own; functioning instead as the upholder of the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccontent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 level. (Of course, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccontent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 could be inferred to the implicit layers; but it is not explicate.)<\/p>\n
I got interested in the question of what was happening when I got \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcdistracted\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 by thoughts (distracted by \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccontent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122). At those moments, I lost awareness of the functioning of the background \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcmatrix\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 & yet, it seemed to me that the emotionality of (what for now I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m calling) the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcdistractions\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 was still dependent on the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcmatrix,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 even generated by the implicit level. The feel was of a implicit knowledge, without which the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccontent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t continue; acting as a support for the explicit content (including when it was merely sensory knowing that was the content).<\/p>\n
