In his book \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcUnformulated Experience<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, Donnel B. Stern explains, the title refers to not only all the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153knowable, communicable implications that have never been spelled out, perceptions that have habitually been passed over<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, but also, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the ongoing organizing activities\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 that supply life with continuity.<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d UNFORMULATED EXPERIENCE is, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the moment-to-moment state of vagueness and possibility from which the next moment\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s articulated experience emerges.<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The structure of unformulated experience is like a figure emerging from a dense fog. There is contour there, but it is fuzzy.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He goes on to say regarding perception, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Experience depends on the meanings we assign to it. Even when meaning just \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcarrives\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 in our awareness (that is, when we do not sit and \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcfigure it out\u00e2\u20ac\u2122), as it most often does, we have played a much larger role in its formulation than we have any idea.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d p. 44-8<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

What is formulated out of unformulated experience is MEANING. Reality does NOT simply confront us. We INTERPRET our way through time. And the unformulated also refers to a kind of \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcselective inattention\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 what we filter out in the formulating process by limiting our \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcfocal attention\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153keep something out of awareness. If one\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s focal attention is never trained on this \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsomething\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, one is never aware of it\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 it remains unformulated.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d [p. 59] The selective inattention<\/strong> screens out experience \u00e2\u20ac\u0153prior to articulation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, and so avoids cognizing and is excluded from the self-system. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It can never be elaborated.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

You could call this a kind of \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcNOT-KNOWING\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 it underlies the formulating of experience, and is just as influential as what is allowed INTO interpreted experience. Not-knowing can be a source of anxiety because of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the tendency we all have to avoid the unfamiliar.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d But NOT-KNOWING can also be relied on AS a source of meaning, and the openness experience that one feels at THE EDGE OF THE FUTURE\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 where the ever unfolding NOW reveals\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 where the vitality of being, and the richness of knowing found, and activate each instant.<\/p>\n
