The Sky: Gaynor’s post and the comments thereon

Hi all,

I was glad to see this exchange. As you know, the very first paragraph of TSK talks about the sky, and points out that even as we celebrate its openness, we also impose a (completely artificial) boundary between the sky and the space that lies beyond.

I myself count as one of my meaningful experiences seeing the moon in an almost total eclipse: for the first time, I had the sense that the moon was really a three-dimensional body in space, and not just a disk in the sky. My understanding of space shifted in that moment, but of course it does not good to try to describe how.

We are moving on to unit 5 for the next two weeks. I look forward to hearing how it goes.

Jack
