Aryadeva: Refuting Truly Existent Time

I was really interested that Jack suddenly told us those two stories about Aryadeva in Class 3 today. They spoke very strongly to me in communicating how this exploration of time has such deep bearing on how we live our lives, who we are, and who we become.

Some while ago a friend emailed Chapter 11 of Treatise of the Four Hundred Stanzas: Catuhsataka Sastra Karika by Aryadeva. It is entitled ‘Refuting Truly Existent Time’. Here is the link to the whole thing: http://www.fodian.net/world/zgsbl_e.html

It doesn’t make easy reading, but I suspect is highly relevant to our enquiry. The first stanza of the chapter (251) reads:

The present pot and the past one/ Do not exist in the future pot./Since both would be future/The future would not exist.
