Positions & Read-outs

Does having to transcend meanings, speculations and visions – even those that are timed-out, go against viewing positions as act of positioning? Are the acts of positioning the same as time-out meaning?

All of this can be seen as different approaches and the unfolding of the TSK vision from lower to higher knowledge.

In the first level, the self establishes itself and the world that it knows by moving off center, beyond the point-instant of temporal knowledge. In one unified action it takes a position, posits a situation and imposes meaning… Form and feeling, specific characteristics and qualities, knowing and being, and the entire realm of human values and meanings all arise as a direct consequence of the self’s positionings. LOK 147

A way of leading us deeper into the potential for the self to free itself of positions (approaching the second level vision) is the read-out and its principle. Read-out is the informing, communicative output by time of a particular focal setting on space, based on a certain sort of knowing being in force. This is the read-out principle: no situation relates to any other. No point even establishes that there will be a next point, or establishes itself as a point. Every message as to ‘what is so’ is completely self contained. WIR 84/301

Due to our forward and outward directedness and our need for continuity, successive read-outs seem closely related. But this seeming reality can be doubted.

The read-out can be viewed as another way to talk about the logos. Access to the logos is central in second level knowledge; at the same time, it opens the possibility of third level knowledge, which goes beyond cognition.

There is an integrity, certainty, and infinity that is found by working through the subtle ‘read-out’ level of second stage experience. This process is necessary, for it helps us to transcend meanings, speculations, and visions—even those which are ‘timed out’. For, we can learn to see even apparently transcendent visions as being precisely seductive messages which present themselves as being ‘transcendent’, as ‘beyond meanings’, or as ‘insights into relativity’. Second stage visions have the potential to go on forever if ‘time’ and the self-challenging read-out law is not understood.

The ideas and pointings (meanings and timed-out meanings) say ‘nothing’ because they lead us from a lower condition (the first level) to a higher one (the third level) that, in a certain respect, turns out to be ‘the same’ as our beginning. It is precisely due to the undermining of all meanings, of all ‘being led’, and even of the undermining notion itself (of truth being relative to our approach or read-out), that it is possible to bring the ‘higher’ and ‘lower into relation with one another in a way that is healthy. When all tendency to be manipulated by meanings and goals has died away, real balance can then shine through. TSK 206

    Eliana,

I like the selection of quotes you link together and the observations with which you thread them.

Your post led me to a thought I found interesting:

The suggestion that “read-outs” are not intrinsically connected to anything outside of their own borders–since such a connection would have to invoke sequential, linear time–doesn’t prevent a read-out from being as broad as the sea and as deep as a canyon in itself. In order words, the realm embraced by a read-out, as long as we remain inside it and don’t try to connect it through sequential time and in terms of the abstract identities of a substantial world, can embrace the whole and swim in that wholeness.
