Silent Church

Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford. Wednesday 24 September 2014

St Mary the Virgin,,

Marriage of Sound and Breath meets a Confluence of Different Timings

In this ‘silent’ church there is as rich a soundscape as I could hope for anywhere. Each sound a universe, composed of woven timings.

Man murmurs (sotto voce) his prayers/a zip zips/phone tinkles/camera clicks/ outside vehicle surges/scraping of furniture being moved on stone floor/rocking floor grate/symphony of footsteps/sudden overhead aircraft/Dutch and French tones in passing tourists/noise like an animal rustling/coughs/sniffs/door slams

Sensing sub-auditory sounds. explosion of hormones; seeping by osmosis/gurgle of intestines/creaking deep in bones

Open my eyes to 15 candle flames gently flickering , and ask myself, ‘What is the sound of light?’

    Hi Caroline,

Very nice post. It reminds me a zen koan: what is the sound of one hand clapping? Suggesting that the knowledge we seek is beyond what the intellect seems to grasp.
