A former TSK student from a while ago, saw my Walkabout practice notes on the TSK Inquiry website, and decided to work with it, and post an accounting of her own experience. Her description is striking so I decided to share it here. The instructions we were given follow below:

Look for the dynamic of the field communiqué within appearance. Put differently, envision substance as a message communicated forward by the mind in ongoing acts of naming. In doing this walkabout, give ‘substance’ an expansive definition. It includes anything we consider to be real, and thus includes our own thoughts and emotions and those of others.

I liked how, while substance was being built, she seemed to allow Great Space to suffuse her experience, and it translated in the telling. SEE COMMENTS BELOW…

  1. David Filippone says:

TSK student, Erin, describes her embodiment of Great Space as follows:

Substance and Experience of Substance. And, swelling with substance.

Simultaneous memories wash over and through me. Sitting on the rocks at Quoddy Head in January when it was 40 degrees below freezing, watching the eternity of crashing tides, imagining the petroglyphs alive under the frozen water. Mesmerized by the way the frozen rain iced each shaft of wheat on the plains. Making snow angels under the night sky as a girl outside alone in awe of the stars. The fragrance of pines walking mountain trails in the winter in Colorado…the huskies’ breaths making little clouds of moisture, sucked up into the dry air at once…how many sleeping bears nearby.

Transcending time and place, memories of reading about Shackleton…hearing the groaning of the ice-locked ship and warmth of the men’s life-saving camaraderie. Recalling stories like The Endless Steppe and accounts of prisoners escaping from Siberia on foot, often fueled only by courage. Imagining the silent steps of the snow leopard padding through impossible heights and mystical legends. Everything slowing as the glaciers receded from the Great Lakes….species going extinct and others evolving. The taste of the icy Athabasca River in summer. The warmth of the Inuit, Lakota, Abanaki, Maori… Images of the world 1,000 winters later.

The substance of the snowy field feels timeless and present all at once. I’m awash with the scent of the snow and the fullness of the emptiness. The air, empty of birdsong, is full of memory, presence, earthly and stellar moments. I resist going back inside, wanting to stay in that moment forever. That shimmering moment Beyond form. Transcendent, Silent Substance.
