I used the “raise hand” function in class to share my experience with the exercise but I don’t think that was noticed. “Appreciation” invites a qualitative contact with space or spaciousness. With appreciative eyes and senses, I tuned readily into the feeling quality of space all around me and through me, sensing it as a pervasive and open field. The things, or the appearance of things, in my room served as no obstacle to space. I drew close to an energetic structure in my body, feeling it as a form and an image and a presence, and as I did so, attuned to the space dimension, it seemed there was nothing there to find at all. It eluded me, like a cloud or hologram in a grasping hand. And this “no” of no-thing became the very “permission” for the appearance to be, for its appearing.

Karin, yes, I agree. Joy was not at the forefront of my experience that morning, but when I tune into that ’empty permission for appearance’ it indeed has a magical, wondrous quality. (Nice to ‘see’ you here, again, too…)
I relate your statement saying,…”This ‘no’ of no-thing became the very “permission†for the appearance to be, for its appearing“, to my experience, and to the pointing out by Rinpoche’s in his essay, ‘Geographies of Knowledge‘, in the book Inside Knowledge. pp.128-9
These evocative quotes…
Thanks for making this connection, David — it strongly resonates, especially “hole and substance merge, allowing the ‘no-basis basis’ of appearance to become the full expression of the vision of knowledge.” Beautiful. I believe I read “Geographies of Knowledge” years ago, as part of another collection of essays.
Seems to me that allowing quality is foundational…
There’s a striking essay by Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche in the book, ‘Inside Knowledge‘ entitled ‘Geographies of Knowledge‘, that goes to the heart of the Time, Space, Knowledge vision. It seems to implode in my mind and echoes in my experience, reminding while at the same time clearing space for open vistas.
I look out at the trees and fields and far beyond, and feel into the depths within me. There is an inward-outward play, a cosmos beyond, a constellation within, that feel of me, the remembering of who, the who I seem to reconstitute into each new moment… And words rise like echoes…
Dear Bruce:
How powerful and magical you can describe your experience…. thank you for sharing your experience in such a clear and able way …
Soudi
Thank you, Soudi! And it’s nice to hear from you…
Hi Bruce and Karen,
I liked your mutual recognition of the space dimension, where there is nothing there, but the permission for appearances…whatever form they may present…to actually appear. An inward turning to the ‘no’ of no-thing…an allowing moment and you can feel the energy. A formless form (a black hole, or dark horizon) that I was attempting to exemplify in my post:
Hi Bruce,
and “the very permission of appearance” is connected to a feeling of wondering, joy and even more appreciation. Isn`t it?
Thank you for describing the allowing quality.
Karin
