How many words are there… who would know? If there are almost 7,000 living languages today, each could have several hundreds of thousands of words… if so, then there might be over 2 billion words in use today.
Ken’s poem has me thinking about words… thoughtfully, someone has tried to honor words by designating a word for each day… now there’s a direct relationship to Time and Words! That’s how we use them, isn’t it, to measure and evaluate experience through time. We create WORLDS out of words, and live in, and evaluate them continuously. The cosmic dust of our universe is composed of words… mind stuff. Yes, I think so… we’re almost always in our heads… until we bite on the unexpected…. For an instant… worlds part… space and time open…
APPLESAUCE
by Ken McKeon
The word of the day, the one true thing
For twenty four hours,
There’s nothing slippery about it,
It’s sky stable, a still mauve cloud
In a big blue airy range,
A fathomless display,
Depths of flavor one enters
By way of sprinkled cinnamon
It yields easily to the
Spooning of the open mind,
It’s a real treat, tasty and lasting
For the whole stretch
Of its brief forever time,
Savor it while you’re here
At this table humming out
Your own unlimited infinite display,
But as your tongue touches down
On the spike of a clove
Note the automatic shift,
The quick sharp lostness,
The tears of ripping Time
That wash you’re lit up
Easy open sky-lit day away.
David,
Very juicy this poem.
It points to the unspeakable feel of the field.
