About Michael Gray

I first started studying TSK in the mid 1980's and have since attended a number of retreats and workshops at the Nyingma Institute, in both TSK and Buddhist themes. I participated in the life-changing Human Development Training Program in 1991, and upon returning to Albuquerque co-founded an organization, Friends in Time (with a friend who has Lou Gehrig's Disease), which continues to serve people with similiar disabilities. I contributed an essay to "A New Way of Being"--the last one in the book--in which I describe how learning to honor who I have been has broadened and deepened my openness to present experience. I live in New Mexico with my wife and two sons.

A Third Way

The poetic exploration of feelings (perhaps started this week by Eric) seems like a step in the direction of a third kind of knowing: one that includes the “intensity and intimacy” of polar knowledge, and the appetite for coherence found in … Continue reading

Can the self be my friend and ally?

I’m looking for a snow day from this school.  The reading presents atomistic “polar Knowledge”, which begs for something broader to provide cohesion, continuity, and the weaving of a tapestry in which we can find a place to live.  Temporal/Descriptive Knowledge provides … Continue reading

The Wound and the Bow

Happy Thanksgiving.  I’ve really been enjoying all the activity on this website.  For many months, Jack has been urging us to use this vehicle to share our explorations, and now it is happening.  Speaking of vehicles, in recent posts and … Continue reading

Degrees of Inadequacy

Reading this week’s chapter in Love of Knowledge again, a thought occurred to me.  The situation described–where there is a self, arbitrarily in charge, favoring a kind of knowledge guaranteed never to challenge it’s claim to be in charge, while … Continue reading

The year of the pig, rooster & snake

I hope this is respectful of Tarthang Tulku’s insistence that TSK is not Buddhism, but it seems legitimate to take from anywhere whatever help us to understand the insights of TSK.  In that spirit, I’ve been thinking about the TSK … Continue reading

Keeping a TSK Journal

Jack invited anyone who has experience keeping a journal to make their own suggestions.  I have kept a journal, off and on, for many years, and for the past few months have been making entries almost every day.  I find … Continue reading

Sometimes Yes is the right answer

Part of my reason for posting this morning is to see if I can do it.  My last post required Kathleen’s intervention. I was interested to see the comment from “Lois S”, expressing the euphoria that can come from saying … Continue reading

This week’s exercises (asking who is doing, and saying “No” to the doing) evoke a question: as Karin and Roger also describe, a lot of daily activities seem to proceed automatically, without either the need for or the apparent presence of … Continue reading

Comment from Soudabeh(that went astray)

Dear Michael: Thank you for your sharing. I am currently in a situation that if it was a couple of years ago, I would be very scared… and big time stressed out…, but due to the practices and the teachings … Continue reading

Waiting for the future

Following up on Jack’s invitation, here’s a statement and a question: we tend to wait for the future, at the expense of living our lives in our own time (Waiting for the Second Coming, Waiting for Godot). The alternative we have … Continue reading
