Pick an Object in the Room…

Moment between Objects

I was playing with this little exercise that Jack told us to try during our conference call – to notice between the moments of looking at the object to see if something else is happening. And so I focused on a candle on a shelf in front of a window. While narrowly focused on the candle, thoughts arose regarding its pale jade color, the clean shape of the wax block, the pristine white wick at the top. There was an emotional connection to a familiar thing. I liked it. But that connection wasn’t sequential, it was between the sequence of thoughts, it was deeper, a more encompassing flowing. I left the candle and seemed to flow with this deeper feeling, noticing random movement outside the window, colors of the rolling field, vehicles passing way in the distance.

Noticing the things I just now named was not a process of naming then, as I observed. They were all just appearing in a widening focus, along with an overall good feeling.

I saw the ‘read-out’ as my attempt to later manipulate what I witnessed, and convert it into words and coherent sentences, in order to communicate here just what happened. I clearly saw the ‘doing‘ process of this manipulation, as the consolidating self. Prior to the manipulation, there was noticing what was happening, a kind of view that widened enough to not only include the view, but the awareness of viewing.

Prior to this ‘noticing‘ the witness aspect was a kind of maximum calm, not doing anything — thoughts, colors, and objects just happened. For a moment there may have been no significance to any of it.
