Practice Day notes: Interior as Surface

Challenging the claim that a substantial interior lies behind surface appearances, DTS seems to assign something else to play the role of an agency that operates invisibly in the background.  Sometimes it’s the Field Communique and sometimes it’s Space, but appearance is still the surface of something more fundamental.  Yet, neither the Field Communique nor Space claim to be entities that are substantial, abiding, or independent of our observation of them.  As a communication, does the field communique need to deliver its message before it can be said to exist?  Does space, as nothing at all,  need appearance in order to be known?  It seems that neither the communication of the Field nor the openness of space are substantial, because neither can be depicted except in terms of the appearances that dance them forth.  Substance, on the other hand, claims to exist independent of any story or dance that might include them.  –Michael

About Michael Gray

I first started studying TSK in the mid 1980's and have since attended a number of retreats and workshops at the Nyingma Institute, in both TSK and Buddhist themes. I participated in the life-changing Human Development Training Program in 1991, and upon returning to Albuquerque co-founded an organization, Friends in Time (with a friend who has Lou Gehrig's Disease), which continues to serve people with similiar disabilities. I contributed an essay to "A New Way of Being"--the last one in the book--in which I describe how learning to honor who I have been has broadened and deepened my openness to present experience. I live in New Mexico with my wife and two sons.
