Closing and opening

‘Darkness that reduces light to substance’ makes sense for me, in my daily experience, when I think of moments when, in the act of living them I tend to ‘close’ their potential openness in ready, particular and personal ‘meanings’ and actions which seem to be the only possible ‘answer’ to the situation I am living. And it seems to me that I do that way because I am normally ‘in a hurry’ to make sense of things and respond to things and people (very much in a future-oriented way). I don’t give it time for the answer to come by itself, I put myself ahead of the answer which naturally belongs to the situation.

Instead, when I let experience unfold by itself (very much in the way Kum Nye exercises unfolds by themselves), it is not ‘me’ responding, it is something unfolding. When experience unfolds by itself, and ‘I’ am just attending to it, ‘light’ is not reduced to substance, but it is just revealing itself in open possibilities and appearances. Instead, when ‘I’ respond, I give just ‘one’ possibility and this one possibility tends to reduce light to substance.

Jack, you wrote this week: ‘Our self-centered patterns are themselves an expression of light, and as the reading suggests, the barriers we encounter can themselves become the subject of inquiry.’ Following my line of expression, could I say that my self-centered pattern is light reduced to substance and my inquiry into it opens other possibilities, ‘melting’ substance back into light?

About Marcia

Hello. I´m Marcia Fiker from São Paulo, Brazil. I´ve been in contact with TSK for a long time now and helped to translate Love of Knowledge into portuguese. But so far I have not been a regular practitioner and I´m willing to change this! I´m a psychologist and a translator. Also, I love the Dharma teachings especially as transmitted by Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche. I'm married and have a 18 year old son. Well, I don´t have a photo to send you right away.

Thanks David, it is good if it makes sense to more people, these things often so difficult to express!

    All the best,
    Marcia

  2. Marcia,

I loved this, and how you expressed it. It resonates beautifully. I’m so in tune with it, it feels like I expressed it myself.

    Best wishes,
    David
